What Is An A&R?
This is the secret weapon in the arsenal of a professional ghost — a tool that distinguishes the pros from the amateurs.
Think of the A&R (Analysis & Recommendations) as a check-up at the doctor or a visit to a mechanic. It is a short (3-5 page) document that spells out the strengths and weaknesses — the "analysis" —of your book in its current form (manuscript, diary, tapped interviews). Then, I provide "recommendations" for how, exactly, to fix it.
How Does It Work?
An A&R has three simple steps:
You send over your manuscript draft (or your notes, audio recordings, etc.) to me.
I review the material and write an A&R based on my assessment.
We have a phone call or in-person meeting to discuss the A&R.
An A&R has two main functions:
A.) It is a professional assessment of your book idea.
In one concise document, you are given a blueprint for where your ideas is now and where you need it go to be at industry standards. It's valuable in itself as a measuring stick and a "how-to" guide on how to make your book the best it can be.
B.) It tests the waters for collaboration.
In a few pages you can see exactly how I work and I get a deeper understanding for what you want in your book. After the A&R, we will know if we are on the same page before we invest months of time and thousands of dollars.
What about Cost?
Writing a book is no small commitment of time and finances. Many ghost/clients jump into arrangements headfirst, before they even know how well they work together. This is because many ghosts are focused on making as much money as they can, as fast as they can. Unfortunately, if the match is a bad one, everyone loses.
An A&R, on the other hand, is far less risky:
Money: $1000
Time: 1-2 Weeks
The money is paid in full before work begins.
